Basketball "Slope Relations"

Adapted from tomstinson / NBA, Athlete Performance and Linear Equations (2)

Continued from the exercise "NBA, Athlete Performance and Linear Equations".

You are doing a survey with some of the best teams in NBA (score!). Specifically, you want to see whether a long plane ride for the Away Team has an effect on team scoring.

You find that on average, team who have flown for 2 hours before the game score 95 points, and with 4 hours of travel, the average score goes down to 87 points. Long travel could be hurting performance.

1) Complete the following linear equation to model the relationship between x, hours of travel and y, the team score.
y = x +

2) Explain what the slope means in the equation above.
Common Core Alignment:
8.F.4: Construct a function to model a linear relationship between two quantities

IN Alignment:
Indiana Math 7.AF.4: Define slope as vertical change for each unit of horizontal change and recognize that a constant rate of change or constant slope describes a linear function. Identify and describe situations with constant or varying rates of change.

Hints

Start by trying to write the equation in point slope form. You have 2 points on the line, so you can figure out the slope by plugging into the actual values of the points.
