Tom Brady has asked you to be the architect for his new mansion. Before you draw up concepts, you do a quick calculation of how much the house would cost to Tom.
The land itself costs $2 million. Building the house's foundation will cost $0.5 million. Each floor of the house, including the interior decorations, will cost $1 million.
Complete the following linear equation to model the relationship between x
is the number of floorsy
is the total cost of the house, in millions, including land and foundationy
How much is the house if a total of 4 floors are built?
Total cost (use decimals) =

It is easiest to solve this problem using slope intercept form.
Regardless of how many floors are built, the land and foundation costs will remain the same. Notice this cost is the intercept where x = 0 (in economics, we call this fixed cost - it is a cost that needs to be paid regardless).
